3 Words that Describe My Art Practice

Curiosity, Wonder, and Beauty

Growing up in Utah, surrounded by the spectacular Wasatch Mountains, I found joy in discovering the great outdoors, being in nature, and loved to roam.

My art journey began in college with a drawing and photography class.

I fell in love with drawing in charcoal and pen & ink. I love Photography, taking pictures, and don’t go anywhere without my camera. Creating art brings me great joy, and always passionate about new inspirations and techniques.

I’m mostly self-taught, took some classes at various schools, but my best teachers were the talented, inspiring teachers I was fortunate to study with in their workshops.

I took classes at Otis Art & Design in Los Angeles, Brentwood Art Center, and Palos Verdes Art Center.

Every class, teacher, and fellow artist has contributed to my love of art and the art I create today.

In my 30’s I took time away from art to raise my family, although I always snuck in a class or two.

When my girls left for college, I signed up for my first overseas Plein Air workshop to paint in France. A dream come true! I fell in love with painting in Plein Air and was getting into shows, galleries, and selling my art. At the same time, my 30 year marriage ended, so art took a back seat so I could regroup, heal, and figure out my next phase.

Art was definitely a healer during this time.

Eventually I met & remarried a wonderful man, Greg. We recently moved to France (a life long dream) with our Golden Joey. Our new home is in the South of France, which is an education in itself. Definitely out of my comfort zone, but in a good way.

It’s a whole new world. So many inspiring scenes to paint & abstract.

My art has gone through many phases, abstract is one I keep coming back to. I love to abstract shapes, lines, and express the feeling of the scene I’m painting in color. Also love to have my viewer fill in the blanks.

My art style starts with an abstracted first layer, adding texture, colors, thick paint, etc.

Then I edit, refine in the next layers, creating my landscapes or a floral painting.

It might take a week or a month, sometimes a year to create the final painting that meets all my aesthetics.  It’s not finished until the painting tells me it’s done, then I can let it go to a new home.

So here’s to new beginnings, new experiences, and scenes to capture with my brush.

Art has been such an inspiration, a gift, one I’m so grateful for, and will never tire of.
